Hindsight, Insight, Foresight — and the two positions on either side of them that the program never named out loud. This page is the whole iSight map on one plate: where the sights come from, what order they come in, and why the road back to whole runs straight through the dark.
The i in iSight is the imaginary unit — the number whose square is −1. Mathematicians invented it because some problems could not be solved on the ordinary number line at all; they needed a second direction. Physics later found it could not describe nature without it. That is the claim this lab makes about you: there is an inner i that is not visible on the ordinary line of your life — the job, the résumé, the logged days — and the visible life cannot be solved without it.
The useful thing about i is what happens when you keep multiplying by it. Each multiplication is a quarter-turn around a circle: i → −1 → −i → +1, and back to the start. Four turns, one loop. Every stage of the program sits at one of those turns.
Start at +1 on the right and travel counter-clockwise. The right half is the visible life — what shows, what you can measure. The left half is the shadow: the stored load nobody logged. Each quarter-turn multiplies by i. Four turns and you are back at +1 — the same point, one loop wiser.
You cannot get from +1 to +1 by staying at +1. The only way around is through −1. Amber is the first turn, still in the visible half; rust is the pass through the shadow; blue is the climb back out. The dashed arc is the part of the circle most programs pretend is not there.
Nothing logged, nothing named. You are flying, and you feel fine, and you have no idea what the airframe is carrying. Not a failure — every aircraft starts here. It is only a problem if you never leave it. The lab's word for this position is unlogged.
The first quarter-turn is the record: one number a night, a career load history, a joint inventory. What it finds is stored load — the thing you have been carrying but never measured. Think of it as crude oil: potential, trapped, not yet fuel. Naming it does not release it. That is the next turn.
Square the i and you land at −1, the bottom of the circle. This is the position nobody sells: the stored load, released. It can be uncontrolled — the Jekyll-and-Hyde day, the reaction you did not choose. The findings register exists so that this turn is witnessed instead of merely survived.
The founder has told this turn as a children's story. In Rhigle Rage in Timber Town, Twig — half rhino, half eagle — learns that the rage fire sets off in him is not a defect to be caged. It is energy, and channelled instead of fought, it is what sets him free. That is i2 in one sentence.
Here is why the turn matters to the gauges. Engineers call the stress that is locked into a part before any load is applied — left over from how it was made — residual stress. A part carrying residual stress takes more damage from every cycle, because each new load lands on top of the old one. Shame and fear are residual stress. The energy released at −1 is what empties the container, so that the same day costs less. That is exactly the number Hindsight Daily reads: damage per cycle. Empty the residual, and the curve bends.
Third turn. You know where the load concentrates, which situations are Kryptonite, what the pattern looks like a week before it arrives. Envelope management lives here — operating limits, managed rather than merely survived. You are not fixed. You are instrumented.
Four turns and you are back at +1 — the same number you started on, and nothing else is the same. The repair that worked is written into the manual. The habit rides the gorilla instead of fighting it.
The last quarter-turn, from −i to +1, is the one many religions and most psychological traditions have a name for: embracing the whole self — the negatives with the positives, the shadow with the light — to become whole. The lab did not invent it; it only noticed that the engineering word for the same thing is integrity: Latin integer, untouched and undivided. A structure has integrity when no part of it is being denied. So does a person.
And then the circle continues, because a life is not a ladder and there is no top rung. Recertification is the program's word for going around again on purpose.
Most self-improvement is drawn as a ladder — up and to the right, forever. Two things go wrong with a ladder. First, anything that goes only up is an exponential, and exponentials do not come back: anxiety is the curve going ballistic, depression is the same curve in a tailspin. Second, a ladder has no room for the bottom of the circle, so the bottom gets treated as failure rather than as a position on the route.
The solid curve is anxiety: up and away, faster every day, no ceiling. The dashed curve is depression: the same shape flipped, down and away, no floor. Both are the exponential y = eˣ, and an exponential does not come back on its own.
Multiplying by i is the mathematical way of saying change planes. The same energy that was running away on a straight line becomes a wave on the circle: bounded, periodic, guaranteed to come back. That is not a metaphor for comfort. It is the reason the program can promise a return trip.
After one quarter-turn the same motion becomes a wave: a ceiling at +1, a floor at −1, and a next crest. The amplitude is still there. What changed is that it comes back.
Every integrity program has something at the top that is not a task — a policy that says the program shall exist. For aircraft that is a one-page directive. For this lab it is Insider Threat, the founder's memoir series and the driving philosophy of the program. Its claim is the reason the circle has a left half at all: you are the load and the crack. The structure and the flaw are the same object, so any program that assumes your own soundness cannot be trusted, and every program must be built on measurement instead.
Read that claim against the circle and the shadow half stops being a design flaw. The insider threat is the self that fears −1 so much it stays at +1 forever — unlogged, uninspected, and certain. The three sights the site has always used — Hindsight, Insight, Foresight — are turns two, three and four. The two positions the site never named are the ones on either side: the unlogged start and the recertified return. They are the same number. That is the whole point.
It does not say the bottom is good. It says the bottom is a position, and that positions have a next one. It does not say four turns take four weeks, or four years; the circle has no clock on it. And it does not say you go around once. Nobody does.
