Something knocks the marble. It rolls up the side, slows down, and comes back. Meanwhile somebody is shaking the table — constantly, all day, every day. The marble never sits still.

That's your daily score. And there are three completely separate things going on that people usually smash together into one word, "wellbeing": where the bottom of the bowl sits, how steep the sides are, and how hard the table is being shaken.

A steep bowl snaps the marble home in a day. A shallow bowl lets it wander for a week. Same person, same shocks — completely different experience of the same bad Tuesday.

We call that recovery time the ring-down. It's borrowed straight from aircraft testing, where engineers thump a structure and time how long it takes to stop vibrating.

The bowl explains what the ring-down is. It doesn't explain why anyone would ever want a shallow one. For that you need the second analogy — and it's the one aerodynamicists argue about, because in aircraft design a fast return to level is a choice, and it is not free.

Trim an aircraft, then hit it with a gust. Static stability is what it does in the first instant: does the nose start back toward where it was, or keep going? Dynamic stability is what happens over the next few seconds: does the oscillation die out, hold, or grow? Those are two different properties, and an airframe can have one without the other.

STABLE BY DESIGN

A trainer, an airliner, a sailplane. Big tail, centre of gravity well ahead of the neutral point. Let go of the stick and it finds level on its own, every time, with nobody helping. Predictable steadiness, and it costs you: heavier control forces, a slower roll into the turn, less airframe for the same job.

RELAXED STABILITY BY DESIGN

A modern fighter. The centre of gravity is moved aft, deliberately, until the airframe barely wants to hold its own attitude — or doesn't at all. That buys ferocious quickness: it changes direction the instant it's asked. The price is a flight control system correcting it many times a second, forever. Switch that off and it doesn't get sloppy — it departs.

Neither one is the better aircraft. They're different answers to different missions, and an engineer choosing between them is choosing what to be good at. The trainer's whole job is to be survivable in the hands of somebody learning. The fighter's whole job is to be somewhere else before the problem arrives.

WHAT THAT BUYS YOU, READING YOUR OWN TRACE

Now put your ring-down next to that. A short ring-down is not simply "better" — it describes an airframe that returns to trim hard and fast on its own. A long ring-down describes one that doesn't, and that reading splits two ways depending on what's holding it:

A person is not an airframe with a spec sheet. Nobody chose your configuration at a design review, and Modal Survey never tells you which row you are — it prints the numbers and leaves the reading to you.

The bowl tells you where you settle and how hard the sides push back. The airframe tells you why anyone would want a shallow bowl — and what has to be running for a shallow one to be flyable.

Keeping these apart is the entire point. You can sit at a 7 and be fragile. You can sit at a 5 and be solid as a rock. A mood average cannot tell you which one you are — and neither can a good week, because good weeks happen inside bad years.

Never combined into one score. Three readings, three lines, three plain sentences. The moment you average recovery speed against level you've built exactly the number that hides the thing worth seeing.

Four months of days each. Identical average score. One of them has gone quiet — small jolts, nothing much landing, nothing much mattering. The other is taking real hits and putting them down fast.

A wellbeing score alone says these two lives are going equally well. Modal Survey says one of them is braced and the other one has stopped playing.

Avoiding damage isn't strength. A life with nothing landing on it isn't a strong structure — it's an aircraft that never left the hangar.

SIX YEARS, ONE PERSON

WHAT IT FOUND IN THE FOUNDER'S RECORD

Hindsight Daily was built on top of a personal log that now runs past 2,300 scored days. When Modal Survey was run across it, the ring-down turned out to swing by more than a factor of four — and the worst stretch was not the one anybody would have guessed.

The slowest recovery in the entire record — 3.6 days, twice baseline — sits in mid‑2023. Not a crisis. A grind: seven jobs in twenty-two months, and a structure taking twice as long to settle after every single hit, for the better part of a year. Day to day, each one of those days looked survivable. That's exactly the kind of slow softening people miss in themselves.

The most recent reading is 1.4 days at a set point near 6.8 — close to the fastest recovery and the highest level in the whole six years, at the same time.

Each point uses a 180-day window centred on its date, so the line lags real change by about three months. Read the shape, not the day.

WHAT IT CAN'T DO

IT IS NOT AN EARLY-WARNING ALARM.

We hoped it would be. The theory says a structure that softens is heading for trouble, so we checked the founder's record against the worst event in it — a stroke in October 2024. His ring-down was improving right up to that morning. The instrument saw nothing coming. We're telling you that because it's true, and because a tool that oversells itself is worse than no tool.

IT IS ONE PERSON'S EVIDENCE SO FAR.

Everything above comes from a single long record. That's enough to build an honest instrument. It is not enough to make claims about you, and we won't.

ENGAGEMENT MOVES THE LEVEL, NOT THE STIFFNESS.

On the days the founder logged "+1 — built the mission," the set point sat about 0.65 higher. The ring-down was identical either way — 0.43 against 0.44, which is no difference at all. And that is a correlation in one record: engaged days may lift the level, or good days may simply be easier to engage on. This instrument cannot tell those apart.

IT IS NOT A DIAGNOSIS.

Modal Survey describes what your own numbers have done. It doesn't name a condition, it doesn't predict one, and it isn't a substitute for a clinician. If the trace worries you, take it to a person.

What it is: a condition check. The way a mechanic tells you what shape the car is in — not an alarm that goes off before the crash.

WHERE IT SITS

A GROUND VIBRATION TEST, FOR A PERSON

Before an aircraft flies, engineers physically thump the finished airframe and measure how it rings. Not the drawings — the real structure. It's called a ground vibration test, and it gets repeated after every major repair or modification, because the properties change.

That's precisely what this is, and it's why it carries the number i5.3.2.1, under Task III, Full‑Scale Testing in the 𝑖SIP framework. It is one of four tasks the program adds under the licence of i5.5.15 — Others as Required, kept numbered so the addition stays visible against the 52 translated 1530D tasks. Hindsight Daily's existing damage and crack-growth displays are Task V — force management, tracking wear on a structure whose properties are assumed. Modal Survey measures the properties themselves.

Two aircraft can carry identical damage and respond completely differently. So can two people. Now there's an instrument for the difference.

Measure the structure, not just the wear.
