Structures do not usually fail in the middle of a panel. They fail at the joints — where two members meet, where load transfers, where stress concentrates. In a life, joints are how you attach to other people. This is the most underrated item in the entire standard, and it is where exploitation actually enters the structure.
Notice what this inventory is not. It is not a rating of people. Your brother is not a rivet. The inventory describes the attachment itself — the engineered thing between you: how load transfers across it, whether it can be examined, and what happens to the rest of the structure if it lets go. The same person can be joined to you well or badly, and the same joint type can be right in one place and wrong in another. A bonded joint is not a bad joint. A bonded joint where you needed an inspectable one is.
The Feynman question for every row: if this joint failed tomorrow — not the person, the attachment — what load would suddenly have nowhere to go? If you cannot answer, you have found the reason this page exists.
Aviation's taxonomy of how members attach, read across honestly. None of these is the "good" one. Each buys something and bills something.
Many discrete fasteners, each carrying a share. Inspectable, repairable, tolerant — one rivet fails and the rest hold while you fix it.
A relationship maintained through many small, visible commitments — calls, standing dinners, kept promises. Any one can slip and be replaced. High maintenance by design; that is the feature.
Adhesive across the whole faying surface. Stiff, efficient, seamless — and hard to inspect. When it fails, it tends to fail suddenly, and the damage is invisible until then.
Deep fusion — histories merged, finances merged, identities merged. Immense capacity. The bill: you cannot easily see the state of the bond from outside it, and disbonds propagate quietly.
The members are made one; the parent material itself fuses. Strongest of all — but the heat-affected zone beside the weld is altered metal, often more brittle than either original.
Family, and family-like bonds: attachments that changed you in the making. The weld may be sound while the zone beside it — the part of you reshaped by the joining — is where cracks start.
A single fastener that permits rotation. Transfers load while both members stay free to change angle. Simple, honest, limited.
Colleagues, neighbors, friendships of season and circumstance. Real load transfer, no pretense of rigidity. The failure mode is expecting a pin to behave like a weld.
If this joint fails, does anything else carry its load? Fail-safe means yes — redundant paths exist. Safe-life means no — single path, no backup. Most people are safe-life by accident on their most critical loads and believe otherwise.
Can the joint be examined without damaging it? In a life: can you talk about the relationship, inside the relationship? A joint that cannot survive being looked at is already carrying a defect — the inability itself.
Bolt aluminum to steel in salt air and the aluminum corrodes preferentially — the joint consumes one member to spare the other. Ask honestly: in this attachment, is one member being steadily consumed? Which one? That is not a load problem. It is a chemistry problem, and it runs even when nothing is happening.
Fracture critical. A joint that is safe-life (no redundant path) and uninspectable gets flagged below. In aviation that combination earns a special classification and mandatory attention — not because failure is imminent, but because if it comes, nothing catches it.
Use initials or role names — this register describes attachments, and it stays in this browser. Inventory the load-bearing joints first: the ones whose failure would redistribute real load.

The joint register feeds the Corrosion Assessment (i5.2.7) — galvanic pairs are corrosion findings by definition — and the placard derivation (i5.4.2): a fracture-critical joint is precisely where an operating restriction earns its keep. Findings from this page (an uninspectable joint, an active pairing) belong in the Findings Register (i5.3.8), each with a disposition. A flagged joint is not an instruction to end anything — it is an instruction to inspect, which is the one thing a flagged joint has not been getting.
This instrument is exploratory, not diagnostic. It borrows the discipline of a structural-integrity program to help you inventory, declare, and inspect — it does not measure a clinical condition, and it issues no clinical conclusion. Its reflective moves are informed by practices with strong evidence bases in structured psychology — self-monitoring and written records as used in cognitive behavioral therapy, values clarification as used in acceptance-and-commitment approaches — but working a worksheet is not a course of therapy and does not substitute for one.
Some findings route outside this program, and routing them out is a completed task, not a failed one. Persistent depression, anxiety that does not respond to load reduction, trauma symptoms, crisis, or anything involving harm to yourself or others are outside this program’s certification basis. They belong with a qualified medical or psychological authority — a physician, a licensed therapist (including trauma-specific modalities such as EMDR, which only a trained clinician can deliver), or emergency services. Operating outside the certification basis is prohibited. A flag on this register describes an attachment pattern, never a person, and it is a prompt to inspect β not a verdict on any relationship or an instruction to end one.
