Task I · i5.1.3 · Soundness Design Criteria

THE GOVERNOR

The mission says what the structure is for. The governor says what the structure holds while flying it — the clamps at your ends, the braces along your span, and the margin you deliberately leave unloaded. This is the design-side twin of the 𝑖SRM buckling repair page: same column, same physics, applied before the buckle instead of after.

The physics: end conditions multiply capacity

Take a slender column and press down on it. At some load it stops compressing and suddenly bows sideways — it buckles. Euler's formula says the critical load is Pcr = π²EI / (KL)², and the term to stare at is K, the end-condition factor. K describes one thing only: how the column's ends are held.

Read that middle column again. A fixed-fixed column carries four times the load of pinned-pinned and sixteen times the flagpole — without adding one gram of material, without the column becoming "stronger," without any self-improvement at all. Naming your end conditions multiplies your capacity without changing anything else about you. That is why the governor is a design task and not a willpower task.

The standard's position, stated exactly: it requires that the ends be named; it does not prescribe what must clamp them. Faith is one clamp set. Vows are another. Chosen non-negotiables, and the inner 𝑖 as a named authority, are others. The program is agnostic about which. It is not agnostic about whether.

Braces, crookedness, and margin

Braces along the compliant span

Between the clamps, the span flexes — that is what a span is for. Braces are the revisable supports that shorten the unbraced length: routines, standing check-ins, the weekly inspection, the person who reads your interpretation (i5.3.7). List them; mark each one's interval.

Initial crookedness — assumed, not confessed

Real columns are never straight, and the only analysis that predicts real behavior is the one that assumes crookedness at manufacture. State yours as a design assumption — the standing bias the structure is built with, which every load will amplify sideways.

Declared safety factor — the fraction you leave unloaded

Aircraft carry a factor of 1.5 between limit and ultimate: the structure is expected to be overloaded, so margin is designed in, not hoped for. Declare yours: what fraction of your capacity is deliberately reserved — unbooked, unpromised, unassigned? A person operating at a factor of 1.0 has decided every load is an ultimate load.

What this feeds

These criteria are what the placards trace back to. The Envelope Management page (i5.4.2) derives never-exceed limits from the margins you set here; the 𝑖SRM buckling procedure is this page run in reverse, after a buckle; and the safety factor becomes the arithmetic behind every "no" the placard set will let you point at. Criteria you did not set deliberately still exist — they are just set to 1.0, by default, by whoever loads you next.

Operating restriction — the referral limit

This instrument is exploratory, not diagnostic. It borrows the discipline of a structural-integrity program to help you inventory, declare, and inspect — it does not measure a clinical condition, and it issues no clinical conclusion. Its reflective moves are informed by practices with strong evidence bases in structured psychology — self-monitoring and written records as used in cognitive behavioral therapy, values clarification as used in acceptance-and-commitment approaches — but working a worksheet is not a course of therapy and does not substitute for one.

Some findings route outside this program, and routing them out is a completed task, not a failed one. Persistent depression, anxiety that does not respond to load reduction, trauma symptoms, crisis, or anything involving harm to yourself or others are outside this program’s certification basis. They belong with a qualified medical or psychological authority — a physician, a licensed therapist (including trauma-specific modalities such as EMDR, which only a trained clinician can deliver), or emergency services. Operating outside the certification basis is prohibited. The K-factor arithmetic on this page is real column mechanics used as a disciplined analogy; it quantifies the analogy's own terms, not any psychological measurement.
